Older Computers faster than new ones? posted by Jakedasnakeman on 07-07-2010 10:17 PM

Here is my theory, whether it be common sense or me just thinking of stupid stuff
I have noticed that older computers tend to connect to the internet and run applications better than new computers.
Let me make an example. An older 2005 computer running windows xp runs faster than a 2010 computer running windows 7.
Why is this? Is it because windows xp is smaller and has been around long enough to work out all the bugs?
And by faster I mean smoother.
Tell me what you think

Because windows 7 is crap maybe?
If you put linux such as ubuntu on both machines, the newer one SHOULD run faster, as long as it has a better processor

Age doesn't matter. The resources the computer has available does. Also, it depends on the method of connecting. Wireless might be harder than a wired connection and vice versa. Also if you need to configure settings the one that has already been vonnected will connect faster because it has the settings.

Not to mention, with newer operating systems, there's more base processes/services/etc that run because they expect you to have a better computer. Where as per say XP/Win2k they didn't think you would have much so all that extra stuff isn't there. There's so many useless graphical "bells and whistles" with Vista/7 that it's not even funny. Turn them off and you'll notice a huge improvement.

Sometimes it's true, sometimes it's not. Depends on what the user has done to it.
Older computers don't have crap, not nearly the hardware that computers have today, and if you look at the OS, it's tiny. Compare the features and everything to Windows7; newer ones are full of stuff. The filesize alone is way smaller.
But, install a couple programs and things, and it starts going pretty slow pretty fast.

DOS isn't exactly a user friendly environment though. Now if you add a nice GUI and still be able to keep that command line goodness that'd be fant.... wait, I just described *nix based systems. >.<

Well, most programs are not 100% stable with w7 since it's pretty new. I bet in a few years, many programs will be optimized to run better on w7.

Most Linux OS are pretty good. Not as user friendly as windows but highly stable.
